Galapagos | Bartolome

Bartolome

There is no lavish Hollywood set or science fiction film that could simulate a moon or Mars landscape more impressively than the lava landscapes on Bartolome. They are both barren and fascinating. The views from the summit, which is just under 100 metres, are spectacular taking in, for instance, the island Santiago!

The crater landscape is shaped by several small volcano cones and impressive lava flows. The sparse vegetation consists of lava cacti and tiquilia plants. The animal world in this part of the island is limited to lava lizards and locusts as well as a few marine lizards.

Bartolome has two faces: off to the side of the craters there is a beach which is very popular with marine turtles. Towards the west of the island the flora and fauna become more diverse and offer the contrast of very bright colours. There is also a beautiful beach for bathing right beside the Ecuadorian landmark Pinnacle Rock.

Just a short walk takes you to another beach with sharks and turtles.
