Galapagos | San Cristobal

San Cristobal

The most easterly island of the archipelago is called San Cristobal and extends over approximately 500 square kilometres. The small port Puerto Baquerizo Moreno is very quiet. The promenade of the fishing port is currently being tastefully refurbished. You almost have the impression that there are more sea lions sunning themselves than inhabitants.

One of the few boarding houses on San Cristobal is the simple but charming Hostal Orca with 20 rooms directly on the beach. It is within walking distance of the harbour and the briefing centre of the National Park.

The island has two climate zones: the populated south-west and the highlands are humid whereas the flat north-east is dry. Hence it is hardly surprising that San Cristobal has jungle vegetation in the highlands. The population of the giant tortoises in the north-east is small. However, there is a very beautifully located tortoise breeding station offering extensive opportunities for walking in an unspoilt nature and encounters with many different types of animal.

One popular boat excursion takes visitors to the island Lobos, the sea lion island.
